We all have goals in life, we all want to reach certain heights at a certain age or stage in life; having new resolutions we feel motivated to achieve upon the start of a new year. We can talk, but can we walk the walk? Will we walk the walk?
Setting up goals is the first step into achieving them.
How do you set your goals? Do you usually write them down or do you say them in your head a few times a day? A few times a month? A Year?
I like to write them down as reminders in my calendar. This way, I get notifications from time to time to help me keep on track. You can try it too. You know, they say, if you see an ad a few times its concept/ idea will be implanted in your head, and eventually you will either click the ad, inquire about it, purchase the product etc. So in a way, if I see my goal a few times in the form of notification/ reminder, and say I am busy with other things in life, by seeing it a few times, I am bound to attend to it eventually.
But you see, there is a flaw in this method or thinking. While it can be effective, it does not guarantee action. The action has to really come from within. I have to be motivated and “in the mood”, “free enough” to take action. How can I make it better then?
The Best Way to Achieve Your Resolution: Setting a Routine!
1. Write down your goals
2. Break them down into steps
3. Dedicate an hour a day to achieving one of your goals/ steps
4. Specify a time line
Another way to achieve your goals, is to dedicate an hour a day to doing something, anything, towards achieving it. This way you will not “be bound to get to it eventually” but you will actually take action.
So you see, there is always a way to improve and make even the smallest actions more profound. So this year, I am going to dedicate an hour a day to achieving some of the goals I had written down in my calendar.
Not only will you feel accomplished, knowing that you can put that check mark beside the task you’e set for that day, but you will also become very effective with your tasks in general. You will even start to dedicate more time, and it will become part of your daily routine (not necessarily a chore), you will want to do more and achieve more.
If you think this may still be a bit difficult for your to achieve, that’s alright, write down a few goals you’d like to achieve within the year. Then, break them down into steps. Write down all the steps you have to take to achieve the goal, then you do one step at a time.
Lastly, make sure to specify a time line. Would you like to achieve your goal/step in a day, week, month, year? 5 years?
Sometimes you will fail. Sometimes you will not achieve everything you’d like to accomplish. And that is ok. As long as you are aware of it, and as long as you can make it up somehow. Don’t just let it collect dust, do not procrastinate for ever.
Failing is Ok. But Do Not Let It Stop You From Trying.
So this year, do not be afraid to fail, and I even challenge you to fail. It is through failure that we become stronger, that we learn what is best for us, and learn how to become better at what we do and love. It is through failure that we learn to know what true success looks like.
If you’re a writer, and you’ve written the most amazing book, and you are scared your second book won’t live up to the hype of the first one, WRITE IT STILL! It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t become as successful as the first one, are you writing for the sole purpose of making your material more successful than any previous work? Or are you writing for the sake of writing, because it makes you happy, because it makes you enter a world of imagination? Because you love it? It should not be looked at as being the ends to a mean, there is no end and no mean. Just write. Because that is what you do. You are a writer. Do not let anything, anyone, any feeling or thought stop you. Write your ‘worst’ even, and then write it again, and again. Or write something new.
If you are a student in school, and you have tons of exams, practicals, quizzes, not to mention homework, reading and studying… do not give up. Even if you fail one exam, continue looking forward, create a plan that is smart for you, a strategic plan that will allow you to do better next time. One exam will not (and should not) affect your future. And if it does, please let me talk to your teachers and supervisors! When you enter the work force after school, no one will know or care about your grades. So when you study, do it for you, do it because you want to retain that information, because you want to be the best and know the most about your field.
Success. Go Get it!
If you are a young entrepreneur, failing should not be in your vocabulary. Because failing just means learning from experiences that were not as successful. Experiences that did not reach the heights you imagined. Those experiences are essential for allowing you to achieve those other more successful goals. It is thanks to those “failing” steps, that you will reach higher, learn, and adapt.
No matter what field you are in, always think ahead, do research, ask questions, inquire about whats out there, and how you can improve and be better. With more self improvement and development comes more confidence, maturity, and positive experiences going forward.
So here’s another resolution idea for you: Ignore the Naysayers.
Happy New Year! 🥂🎊
How will you make 2019 your best year?
